Burial Hill tour tells inspirational stories of Plymouth veterans

Wicked Local South/Mariner - 11/29/2019

Nov. 29--PLYMOUTH -- Local veterans have served their country and community in every war. Several of them are interred on historic Burial Hill, one of America's oldest burying grounds. Learn about their inspirational stories of bravery and sacrifice during a free tour at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

Veterans on Burial Hill will focus on the lives of Plymouth servicemen and their contributions to the military. Anne Mason, executive director of the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, will lead the tour and talk about these local heroes as part of Burial Hill: History in Progress.

Included in this tour will be stops at the graves of Nathaniel Carver and Charles B. Allen. Carver was a sea captain who was captured off Plymouth by Lt. Horatio Nelson, who would later become one of England's most revered naval commanders. Carver helped Nelson elude the French Navy during a chase from Boston to Vineyard Sound in 1782.

Allen was a member of the Fifth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry, the only cavalry regiment from Massachusetts composed exclusively of African-American men. He served with distinction in Virginia and Texas from 1863 to 1865.

Burial Hill: History in Progress is a free program that will continue through the 2020. Launched in 2011 by the Plymouth Antiquarian Society, the Burial Hill series is now a collaborative program with the Pilgrim Society and Pilgrim Hall Museum.

Each year the organizations present a series of history expeditions on Burial Hill. Tours are offered at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month, except January. Tour begins at the top of Burial Hill, near the National Pilgrim Memorial Meetinghouse in Town Square.

No reservations are required for individuals and families. Wear appropriate shoes, as Burial Hill includes steep and slippery slopes. Severe weather may cancel tours. Updates will be posted on the Plymouth Antiquarian Society Facebook page.
