Cresson funeral home to cremate old flags with veterans

Tribune-Democrat - 9/28/2018

Sept. 28--A Cresson funeral home is offering a new program to retire flags with dignity by cremating them with veterans.

Kennedy-Anderson Funeral Home announced the start of the program, in which every veteran is cremated with a retired flag, on Thursday. There is no charge for the service.

Jim Rudolph, a representative of the "Retire Your Flag" Veteran's Funeral Care service program, provided the necessary training to Garrett Anderson, owner of Kennedy-Anderson Funeral Home, on Thursday.

Anderson, the son of a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, said he also had multiple family members, including his grandfather and sister, serve in the military.

"I decided to partner with Veteran's Funeral Care and become the exclusive provider of this service for Blair and Cambria counties to better serve our area veterans," Anderson said.

When a flag is no longer worthy of display, it can be donated to Kennedy-Anderson Funeral Home for cremation with a veteran, Rudolph explained.

"Your flag will honor a veteran by being draped across them at the time of the cremation. It is a fitting tribute to veterans and a patriotic way to 'retire' aged flags," he said.

A collection barrel for retired flags has been placed at the funeral home. Other collection locations across the region will be announced at a later date.
