Jasper County Veterans Affairs holds special meeting for budget

Newton Daily News - 1/23/2020

Jan. 23--Jasper County Veterans Affairs met Wednesday afternoon to discuss the budget that will be presented in front of the Jasper County Board of Supervisors. There was some concern among commission members about recent cuts to budgets in departments.

JCVA is doing fine with where it should be six months into the fiscal year, which runs from July to July. The organization also has the ability to move money around if the need were to arise.

"I know some of this stuff we didn't spend near the money we had allotted," Commissioner Marta Ford said.

Director Kurt Jackson added, "What I am short in one category I can move to another category as long as it is in either the office expenses or the benefits section."

There were some concerns that were brought up by commissioners after hearing about the possibility for budget cuts among departments and an upcoming budget hearing scheduled for 10:30 a.m.Jan. 29.

"I understand they are cutting budgets in every department," Ford said.

Jackson added, "Nobody has mentioned any budget cutting requirement from me. I'm the smallest department in the county ... I guess we won't know that for sure until I go to the budget hearing."

The commission doesn't know if a cut in their budget is imminent at all but they all agreed that if it were to happen they would figure things out just fine and be able to move forward with providing their services.

"If they cut they cut and then we just come back to the board room and look where we might be a little fat," VSO Keith Thorpe said.

Ford added, "It is not a big deal."

The board unanimously approved putting forward the budget as proposed in front of the Jasper County Board of Supervisors. The next regularly scheduled meeting is for 3 p.m.Feb. 12.
