Pioneer Press Newspapers - 11/2/2020

Nov. 2--The Franklin Park American Legion Post 974 will be conducting its annual Veterans Day ceremony and flag retirement on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The event will be held at 11 a.m. outside the post at 9757 Pacific Avenue, Franklin Park. Masks are required, people will be distanced six feet apart, and the event will be held entirely outdoors because of COVID-19 public health precautions.

Franklin Park Mayor Barrett Pedersen is scheduled to speak, and trustee John Johnson will be the master of ceremonies, Post Commander Anthony Siciliano said.

The ceremony will include the retirement of American flags will the assistance of Sax-Tiedemann Funeral Home & Crematorium.

"The flags are placed in a crematorium-type casket and escorted to the crematorium," Siciliano said. "And then the flags are burned in the crematorium. They're retired in that fashion."

One new name will be added to the United States Military Armed Forces Veterans Memorial in Franklin Park. Robert W. Kolwalsky, a Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War, will be added to the memorial. He is currently a member of Post 974, Siciliano said.
