N.C. veteran completes over 3,000 pushups in an hour, breaks world record

He certainly pushed himself to the max.

A man from Charlotte, N.C., broke the Guinness World Record for most pushups completed in an hour, hitting a total of 3,050. The previous record was 2,900.

WRAL.com reports that TShane Johnson—who is also a veteran of the Marine Corps—spent five months training for the Saturday endeavor. A motivational speaker, Johnson explained that he takes on such feats as a means of getting “a lot of really great messages out.”

One previous venture into physically communicating such messages involved hiking all the way from Orlando, Fla., to Los Angeles, Calif., in order to raise money for Hike Across America, a nonprofit he founded which seeks to aid homeless vets.

“What I always found interesting was to watch people write checks and post on Facebook, but they could never really understand the identity of somebody going through something tough,” said Johnson to the news station. “As I started to run and realized I garnered a bigger audience with doing this than I did with talking about homeless and mental health issues and how we could fix it, it just kind of turned into this where, OK, we got a great audience. I can do these things, and we’ll be able to help.”

According to his website, Johnson himself has triumphed over his own struggles throughout his lifetime.

“I have overcome being homeless, being broke, losing everything and dying three times,” reads his website’s statement. “I don’t just succeed in my own businesses and sales, I launch others to success and celebrate them because I am them.”

WCNC News additionally reports that Johnson titled his Guinness World Record “Push-Ups for Purple Hearts.” The money raised from his efforts will be donated to the National Purple Heart Honor Mission.
