County employees in military may get extra pay, if deployed

The Daily Herald - 7/7/2021

EVERETT — When a reserve member of the United States Armed Forces is deployed, their military salary is often lower than what they earn in their regular job.

A proposal from Snohomish County Councilman Nate Nehring would change that for reservists who work for the county.

Under his plan, the county would pay the difference in salaries to county employees who are deployed to military service.

"This action of providing differential pay to active duty employees will have a significant impact for these families who sacrifice so much for all of us," Nehring said in a recent news release.

The county council is scheduled to consider the proposal after a July 21 public hearing.

If approved, Snohomish would join King and Pierce counties in offering differential pay for military reservists.

Currently, there are eight Snohomish County employees on military leave, Nehring's aide Russell Wiita said.
