New Haven Register - 6/10/2022

Jun. 10—MIDDLETOWN — The Connecticut State Department of Veterans Affairs and Connecticut Funeral Directors Association will hold a military funeral ceremony June 17 for four veterans' unclaimed cremains.

The public is invited to the 10:30 a.m. event at the State Veterans Cemetery at 317 Bow Lane in Middletown. It will take place rain or shine.

Two of these individuals served in the U.S. Army; one in the U.S. Marine Corps, and another in the U.S. Navy. A civilian spouse will also be honored, according to a press release.

DVA Commissioner Thomas J. Saadi will lead the ceremony, supported by the directors of a number of funeral homes across the state, Connecticut National Guard, and Connecticut Patriot Guard Riders, the agency said.

Saadi, CFDA President David W. MacDonald, and other dignitaries will deliver remarks during the event, which will include the posthumous presentation of Connecticut Wartime Service Medals.

At 9:40 a.m., state police and Patriot Guard Riders will escort three hearses containing the cremains from the DVA Rocky Hill campus, the news release said.

Those to be recognized are Pfc. Robert Bensonn and Cpl. Loren Milton Cubbison Jr., both of whom died in New Haven; CPT David L. Groher, and RD3 Morris Meyer his wife Cornelia Meyer, who all died in Bridgeport.

This is the eighth such ceremony held since 2009, when the state established new protocols to identify unclaimed, cremated remains of honorably discharged U.S. veterans in Connecticut funeral homes with the goal of providing them a dignified burial with full military honors, the statement said.
